Hooverphonic first hit the Belgian airwaves in 1996 with their album “A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular”. Right away, the single, “2 Wicky”, was picked up by director Bernardo Bertolucci for his film, “Stealing Beauty”. This heralded the start of what was to become an international success story to which Hooverphonic added a fresh chapter with every new release. In 2006, the band celebrated its tenth anniversary with a “Best of” album titled “Singles 96-06”. At that time CD sales had passed the 1 million mark. A year after the release of their seventh album, “The President of the LSD Golf Club” in 2007, the band’s most experimental album to date, Geike Arnaert, their singer at the time, decided to leave the band and concentrate on a solo career.
Alex Callier and Raymond Geerts, the driving forces behind Hooverphonic, set out to look for a new singer. This challenging quest resulted in Noémie Wolfs as the perfect choice although she is anything but your typical girl-next-door type. She doesn’t have a musical background and neither did she ever take singing lessons ... it’s something that comes naturally to her. The band went into the studio to start recording their new album “The Night Before” with one simple aim: going back to the roots of Hooverphonic. The sources of inspiration were as ambitious as always: the rich orchestrations heard on “The Night Before” echo the best of Burt Bacharach, Ennio Morricone and John Barry, and yet sound unmistakably Hooverphonic. For the most part, the album was recorded at Alex Callier’s home and finalized in the famous ICP Studios in Brussels.
After the big commercial success of “The Night Before”, the band released the hugely successful albums “With Orchestra” and “With Orchestra Live”, revisiting the band’s catalogue in grand orchestral form.
In 2013 it was time to record a second new studio album since Noémie Wolfs joined Hooverphonic. On “Reflection”, the band returns to very natural analogue sounds and therefore needed vivid vibes that you can’t find in a studio. Therefore Hooverphonic turned to their fans to send in the best possible sounding locations to record the album. They ended up recording in 5 different private homes in Belgium and France. And for the first time in their career the band is joined by 3 young male singers/instrumentalists. This is a new and exciting element that adds an incredible amount of space to the new Hooverphonic songs, resulting in the most pop-inspired record Hooverphonic has ever made in their 18 year long career.
