Né à Seymour dans l'Indiana le 7 octobre 1951, John Mellencamp est d'abord un clone de Bruce Springsteen sous le nom de john Cougar. Le succès venant il reprend son nom de baptème et impose sa voix éclatante dans un répertoire blues rock fleurant bon les influences country. Ses succès les plus significatifs se produiseent au tournant des années 80 avec les excellents Scarecrow (1985) et The Lonesome Jubilee (1987).
