Influencé par le ska et Madness en particulier, No Doubt voit le jour dans le comté d'Orange Count (Californie) en 1987. Originellement, la formation réunit John Spence au chant, Eric Stefani aux claviers, et sa sœur Gwen aux chœurs. Ils assurent leur premier concert officiel en première partie de The Untouchables, et sont rejoints par Tony Kanal à la basse pour le deuxième concert.
Alors que le groupe s'organise petit à petit, le suicide de John Spence en décembre 1987 bouleverse leurs projets...
