Hip-Hop has infatuated My_Kayla since her adolescence. Born Micháela Penn in Cleveland, OH the gifted artist wrote her first rap at age 7 which later led to a hobby of freestyling, poetry and songwriting. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Nicki Minaj she went on to drop the local hit 2bb, but eventually took some time off from music to focus on obtaining a master’s degree.
In 2018 her comeback was a cover to Lil Wayne’s record Mona Lisa (feat. Kendrick Lamar) which she titled 'Set Mona Off'; the viral song is a no hook, bar -for-bar tale that distinguishes My_Kayla as a true lyricist and storyteller similar to that of J. Cole and Ms. Lauryn Hill. Building off the momentum, she released her debut album, The 20th Summer which was praised as “Perfection” by LA On Lock. Inspired by good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe), the cohesive album tells the story of the rapper’s final summer home from college. It contrasted the fantasy of how she thought her summer should go with the stark reality of how it went, it is a grand statement about finding inspiration in the face of disappointment.
My_Kayla's versatility attracted the attention of execs in the music publishing industry which led to placements with The Food Network, NBA on TNT as well as other commercials and trailers. In fall 2021 she released the single Toxic displaying a more melodic sound and redesigned production. Her latest single Dennis Rodman is projected to be her biggest hit to date.
