Emily Wurramara, an Indigenous Australian singer and songwriter, was born in Groote Eylandt, Australia. She spent her early years moving between Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island before settling in Brisbane at age six. Wurramara's musical journey began with songwriting and poetry as a child, influenced by artists like Coloured Stone and Yothu Yindi. In 2016, she released her debut EP Black Smoke, which earned her a Queensland Music Award. Her first full-length album, Milyakburra (2018), featured family members and was named after the sacred island of Milyakburra. Wurramara collaborated with other First Nations artists in 2022 to create "Forever 15," a tribute to Cassius Turvey. In July 2024, she announced her second studio album Nara, which won Best Adult Contemporary Album at the ARIA Awards, making her the first Indigenous woman to win in this category.
