Acerina y su Danzonera is one of Mexico’s most legendary orchestras and a cornerstone in the popularization and evolution of danzón throughout the country. Founded in the 1930s, the ensemble became renowned for bringing an elegant, sophisticated, and graceful style to this traditional genre, establishing itself as one of the defining acts in Mexican popular music.
The orchestra was founded and led by Consejo Valiente Roberts, a musician and percussionist born in Santiago de Cuba in 1899, better known as “Acerina.” His nickname referred to the dark tone of his skin, reminiscent of the gemstone of the same name. After performing with several ensembles, Acerina formed his own orchestra and helped transform the genre by slightly increasing the tempo of traditional danzones. His goal was to compete with the era’s most popular styles, such as mambo and rock and roll, while preserving the refined elegance that defines danzón.
Over the years, Acerina y su Danzonera became one of Mexico’s most celebrated orchestras and the resident favorite at iconic dance halls such as the historic Salón México. Through its timeless performances and enduring legacy, the orchestra left an indelible mark on the history of Mexican popular music.
