Kathy Sledge, born Katherine Sledge on January 6, 1959 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an American singer-songwriter and producer. She began performing in 1965 with her family group The Sledge Sisters, later known as Sister Sledge. The group's 1979 album We Are Family reached number 3 on the Billboard 200, earned platinum certification, and produced the top 10 singles “He's the Greatest Dancer” and “We Are Family”, the latter of which received a Grammy Award nomination in 1980. After departing the group in 1989, she signed with Epic Records and released her debut solo album Heart on March 17, 1992, featuring the single “Take Me Back to Love Again”, which reached Number 1 on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart. Her subsequent solo releases include “Another Star” (1995) and the 1997 collaboration “Freedom” with Robert Miles. She reunited with Sister Sledge for performances including a 2000 White House Christmas show, and later formed the touring act Sister Sledge featuring Kathy Sledge. In 2013, she received an Outstanding Contribution to Music honor at the DJ Awards, followed by the Linda Creed Shining Star Award in 2014.
