Völur, a Canadian doom metal band based in Toronto, Ontario, was formed in 2014 by Lucas Gadke, Laura C. Bates, and James Payment. The band was known for their hybrid style of doom metal and folk music, often incorporating jazz structures into their songwriting. Their debut EP, Disir, was recorded in April 2014 and released independently. In 2015, Völur signed with Prophecy Productions and performed at the Prophecy Festival in Germany and released Ancestors, their first album under a label, in 2017. They toured extensively across Canada, the United States, and Europe, including notable tours in 2018 and 2019. Their lyrical themes also drew from Norse mythology, with Disir centered around female Norse goddesses and Ancestors focused on male gods.
