Hurtsmile are an American hard rock band formed in 2007 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, by Extreme lead vocalist Gary Cherone, his brother and guitarist Mark Cherone, bassist Joe Pessia, and drummer Dana Spellman. Following early internet demo releases, the band was placed on hold while Extreme reunited for Saudades de Rock in 2008 and its supporting tour. When Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt toured with Rihanna in 2009, Cherone resumed work on the project, releasing their debut studio album, Hurtsmile, in January 2011 in Europe and February 2011 in the United States. Following a crowdfunding campaign, the group released their second studio album, Retrogrenade, in 2014.
