Lawrence H. "Larry" Lee Jr. (born 1943 in Memphis, Tennessee) was an American guitarist and singer-songwriter whose career spanned several decades. He began playing in R&B acts alongside old friends Jimi Hendrix and Billy Cox, and in 1969 joined Hendrix's band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows as rhythm guitarist, performing at the Woodstock Music Festival, where he sang his own composition "Master Mind". Lee's most notable affiliations were with Al Green and Jimi Hendrix: during the 1970s he acted as band director and lead guitarist for Green's touring band, and his work with the two is reflected on releases such as Nine to the Universe (1980) and I'll Rise Again (1983). He later collaborated with Timothy Lee Matthews on Songs for the Greats (1998) and played with the Memphis outfit Elmo and the Shades, featuring on three cuts of their album Blue Memphis (2009). Although he was a modest presence in the wider rock world, Lee was remembered as a consummate sideman. He passed away in Memphis in 2007.
