Brassy was a Manchester‑based English rock and hip‑hop group formed in 1994, led by singer‑guitarist Muffin Spencer, who had relocated from New Hampshire to Manchester in 1986 and previously fronted The Exuberants. The lineup solidified with guitarist Stefan Gordon, bassist‑backing singer Karen Frost, and drummer Jonny Barrington (DJ Swett). The band’s early activity included the 1996 single "Boss" and the 1999 single "I Can't Wait", released on Costermonger and later on Wiiija, establishing their hybrid sound. In 2000, under Wiiija, Brassy issued their debut album Got It Made, which featured the track "Play Some D" that later gained exposure through a Motorola ad campaign. Their second studio effort, Gettin Wise, arrived on 12 May 2003; the album received mixed reviews and contributed to financial strain for the members. Following the release, the group toured the United States as part of the “Girlz Garage” tour in October 2003, after which Stefan Gordon and Karen Frost departed, and the band disbanded later that year. Post‑disbandment, former members pursued other projects, notably Stefan Gordon and Karen Frost forming Are We Superheroes? in 2020. Brassy’s brief career left a modest imprint on the early 2000s UK alternative scene, with "Play Some D" achieving a degree of recognition through commercial licensing.
