Purple Mountains was an American indie rock project formed by musician and poet David Berman. The project debuted in May 2019, more than ten years after the dissolution of Berman’s previous group, Silver Jews. The project marked his return to music following a period of hiatus, during which he co-produced the album Universalists (2018) for the musician Yonatan Gat. In 2019, the group released its debut single, “All My Happiness Is Gone”, which included remixes by the musicians Noah Count and Mark Nevers. This was followed by the eponymous studio album Purple Mountains in July 2019. The record was primarily recorded in Chicago and was produced by Jarvis Taveniere and Jeremy Earl of the band Woods. Recording credits for the project also included the musicians Aaron Neveu and Anna St. Louis. Berman’s recording history for the ensemble featured the singles “Darkness and Cold” (2019) and “Margaritas at the Mall” (2019). Berman died in 2019.
