Young Heart Attack was formed in Austin, Texas in 2001 by vocalist and guitarist Chris Hodge, vocalist Jennifer Stephens, guitarist Chris “Frenchie” Smith, bassist Steven T. Hall, and drummer Joey Shuffield. The group initially operated as a seven‑piece ensemble, later consolidating to the core lineup that would record their debut releases. Their first single, "Over and Over", appeared in 2003 on XL Records, followed by the EP Mouthful of Love the same year, and the single "Misty Rowe" later that year. The band’s breakthrough came with the release of the single "Tommy Shots" in 2004, which garnered attention from the UK market and led to a tour with The Darkness and Motörhead. In 2004, the single "Starlite" and the EP Mouthful of Love were issued, and the band signed with XL Records for their full‑length album Mouthful of Love, produced by Cliff Jones and recorded at Chris “Frenchie” Smith’s Bubble Studios. After a brief split in early 2006, Young Heart Attack reassembled and released their second album Rock and Awe in 2008, which included the track "Get It Hot" featuring Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister. The group’s activity ceased after the 2008 release.
