Ernest Randrianasolo, known professionally as D'Gary, was born on October 22, 1961, in Antananarivo, Madagascar. A guitarist and singer-songwriter from the Bara Zafindravala ethnic group, D'Gary spent his youth in Tulear, where he absorbed the rhythms of Tsapiky music. His distinctive guitar style, characterized by open chords and detuned strings, reflected traditional Malagasy instruments like the Marovany and Lokanga. At 18, he recorded a single with Discomad and became the guitarist for Feon'ala. In 1988, D'Gary recorded the album Garry with support from the Centre Germano Malgache d'Antananarivo. The following year, he collaborated with American musicians David Lindley and Henry Kaiser on Malgasy Guitar. This collaboration led to further international releases, including The Long Way Home (1994) with Dama and Horombe (1996) with his group Jihé. Returning to Madagascar in 2000, he released Akata Meso (2002).
