The Durutti Column

The Durutti Column, formed in Manchester in 1978, became the principal creative outlet of guitarist, pianist, and occasional vocalist Vini Reilly. After studying guitar and playing with local punk group Ed Banger and the Nosebleeds, Reilly developed a delicate, atmospheric style that drew on jazz, folk, classical music, and ambient textures rather than the aggression associated with much of the post-punk scene. The original Durutti Column lineup quickly dissolved, leaving Reilly at the centre of an evolving ensemble frequently joined by percussionist Bruce Mitchell. The group first appeared on Factory Records’ 1978 double 7-inch compilation A Factory Sample, before releasing The Return of the Durutti Column in 1980. Produced by Martin Hannett and issued in a Situationist-inspired sandpaper sleeve, the album introduced Reilly’s understated instrumentals through pieces such as “Sketch for Summer” and “Requiem for a Father.” The home-recorded LC followed in 1981, while Another Setting appeared in 1983. Reilly expanded the project’s instrumental palette on Without Mercy in 1984, a long-form orchestral work incorporating viola, cello, trumpet, and cor anglais. Circuses and Bread arrived in 1986, followed by The Guitar and Other Machines in 1987, which introduced sequencers, drum machines, and the then-new Digital Audio Tape format. Sampling and electronic rhythms became increasingly prominent on Vini Reilly in 1989 and Obey the Time in 1990, the group’s final studio album for Factory before the label’s collapse. Releases including Lips That Would Kiss, Dry, and Red Shoes appeared during the early 1990s, before Reilly resumed his studio work with Sex and Death in 1994, Fidelity in 1996, and Time Was Gigantic… When We Were Kids in 1998. The Durutti Column remained prolific during the following decade, issuing Rebellion in 2001, Someone Else’s Party in 2003, Tempus Fugit in 2004, Keep Breathing in 2006, Idiot Savants in 2007, Sunlight to Blue… Blue to Blackness in 2008, Love in the Time of Recession in 2009, and the Tony Wilson tribute A Paean to Wilson in 2010. The archival collection Sporadic Three also appeared in 2007, while Short Stories for Pauline, recorded in 1983 but shelved for almost three decades, was finally released in 2012. A stroke suffered by Reilly in 2011 severely affected his playing and required him to relearn the guitar, while subsequent health problems greatly reduced his public performances. His work nevertheless received renewed attention through extensive reissues and archival projects, including the anthology M24J and a 2025 expanded edition of The Return of the Durutti Column. Blood Orange sampled the 1998 track “Sing to Me” on “The Field” in 2025, and a tribute to Reilly formed part of Harry Styles’ Meltdown festival in 2026. Reilly then reunited with Mitchell and multi-instrumentalist and producer Keir Stewart for Renascent, the first new Durutti Column studio album in more than fifteen years. Released on July 31, 2026, the record combined Reilly’s guitar with piano, ambient electronics, beats, and guest vocals from Caoilfhionn Rose and Lucas Elliot, and was introduced by the singles “Liars” and “Scammer.”
