Emil George Conrad von Sauer was a German composer, pianist, and educator born on October 8, 1862, in Hamburg. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Nikolái Rubinstein between 1879 and 1881. Although he studied with Franz Liszt in 1884, he initially denied being a pupil of Liszt before acknowledging the influence in his later years. Von Sauer performed concert tours as a virtuoso pianist between 1882 and 1936. In 1910, he received the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society. He served as the director of the Meisterschule für Klavierspiel at the Vienna Academy between 1901 and 1907 and returned to the position in 1915. His compositions included piano concertos and sonatas, and he edited the works of Johannes Brahms. His recordings included Mozart's “Rondo alla Turca” and the “Adagio Sostenuto” from Beethoven's “Claro de luna”. Von Sauer died on April 27, 1942, in Vienna.
