Manic Depression is a Russian thrash metal band formed in Moscow in 1999 by Max "Max with Bolt" Layko, who had been with Korrosija Metalla since 1997. After initiating the project, Layko recruited bassist Ilya Zudilov and recorded the demo Who Deals the Pain, which was issued by Hobgoblin Records in April 2001. In February 2002, the band won a competition organized by Play magazine, which featured their song “Words of Hate” on a compilation CD. They signed with MetalAgen and released their debut studio album, Who Deals the Pain, in 2003, presenting it at a concert on October 26, 2003. This was followed by Planned Spiritual Decay (2006), released through Mystic Empire Records, which they promoted with a show alongside Destruction in Moscow and an official release concert on March 12, 2006. They subsequently released the EP You'll Be with Us Again (2007) and the album Impending Collapse (2010) through Mazzar Records, followed by the EP Box of Lies (2012) and the album Technocracy (2015). The band won the 2008 Get Started festival competition and performed with peers such as Moray Eel, Devilish Distance, and Inexist.
