Hank Snow

Clarence Eugene Snow, born 9 May 1914 in Brooklyn, Queens County, Nova Scotia, adopted the stage name Hank, The Yodeling Ranger after a childhood marked by financial hardship and parental separation. After spending time with his paternal grandmother and later reuniting with his mother in Liverpool, he earned his first guitar while working as a cabin boy on a fishing schooner in 1926. By the late 1920s he was listening to radio broadcasts of country artists such as Vernon Dalhart and Carson Robison, which shaped his musical style. Leaving sea life in 1930, he worked various odd jobs and performed in local fish houses and minstrel shows, marrying Minnie Blanche Aalders in 1935 and having a son, Jimmie Rodgers Snow. Clarence Eugene Snow entered the recording world in 1936 with a contract from the Canadian division of RCA Victor in Montreal and a weekly CBC radio program that brought him national recognition. He moved to Nashville in 1949 and released records for RCA Victor as Hank Snow, the Singing Ranger. His 1950 Grand Ole Opry debut and the single "I'm Moving On" — which topped the Billboard country chart for 21 weeks — marked his breakthrough. Subsequent Number 1 hits included "The Golden Rocket" and "The Rhumba Boogie"; his rendition of Geoff Mack's "I've Been Everywhere" popularized the tune in North America. Over the following decades he released more than 140 albums and charted 85 singles between 1950 and 1980, including Railroad Man (1963). He celebrated his Canadian roots in the 1968 album My Nova Scotia Home. In 1978 Clarence Eugene Snow was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and received honors from the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. He founded the Hank Snow International Foundation for Prevention of Child Abuse and published his autobiography, The Hank Snow Story, in 1994. After retiring in 1996 due to respiratory problems, he died on 20 December 1999 at Rainbow Ranch in Madison, Tennessee, and was buried at Nashville's Spring Hill Cemetery. His legacy continues through ongoing recognition in country music history, with his songs covered by artists such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Emmylou Harris.
