James Fortune is a Grammy-nominated, Stellar Award–winning, and Dove Award–winning gospel artist, songwriter, producer, and creative visionary. Known for his raw transparency, relatable storytelling, and powerful anthems of hope, Fortune has become one of the most respected and consistent voices in gospel music today.
Born in Richmond, Texas, and raised in the Rock of Salvation Church in Missouri City—where his father pastored—Fortune was behind the drums at age five. Though music was in his DNA, his early dreams were centered around sports. That changed after college when he became choir director at Houston’s Dimension Church and fully surrendered to his call to music ministry. “Ultimately God’s will prevailed,” he says. “And I’m glad I submitted to it.”
Fortune’s professional journey began with his breakout debut, ‘You Survived’ (2004). Since then, he has released 12 albums, including ‘The Transformation’ (2007), ‘Encore’ (2010), ‘Identity’ and ‘Grace Gift’ (both in 2012), ‘Live Through It’ (2014), ‘Dream Again’ (2019), and ‘Dream Again: Live from Rock City’ (2020). His most recent studio album, ‘My Life’ (2022), earned him a 2023 Stellar Award and a 2024 nomination, continuing his streak of faith-filled, chart-topping music. The single ‘Hold On’ featuring Monica and Fred Hammond became a breakout anthem of strength and perseverance.
Inspired by gospel legends like Kirk Franklin and V. Michael McKay, Fortune developed a distinctive narrative style rooted in emotional honesty and real-life vulnerability. “I write from pain, pressure, and personal experience. That’s what makes it real,” he says.
‘My Life’ was born out of one of the most difficult seasons in Fortune’s journey. “The song ‘My Life’ helped me process what I was going through. And as I kept writing, everything kept pointing back to that message,” he shares. Other tracks like ‘Last Word’ and ‘Never Let Me Down’ echo the theme of trusting God even when life doesn’t make sense. ‘Never Let Me Down’ was written in South Africa during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “People were losing loved ones, jobs, hope,” he recalls. “But I wanted to remind them that God hasn’t forgotten about us. He’s never let us down, and He won’t start now.”
Produced by David Outing, the album features powerhouse collaborators including Anaysha Figueroa-Cooper, Minon Sarten, Isaac Carree, and Pastor Mike Jr. Writers like Curtiss Glenn and Josiah Martin added depth to songs like ‘Big’ and ‘Wait On You.’ Fortune’s prayer is that every listener walks away, reminded that their life still has meaning. “One season doesn’t define your lifetime,” he says. “We often suppress what we’re feeling, and if we never deal with it, it becomes something that steals our joy and stops us from dreaming.”
As founder of FIYA World Entertainment, Fortune continues to build and champion the next generation of gospel talent. Every Monday at 8:00 p.m. EST, he co-hosts “Fortune’s Live Talent” on YouTube with Isaac Carree—giving emerging artists a national platform to be seen, heard, and celebrated.
After 3 years, James Fortune released his powerful new EP entitled ‘In the Room: Preluxe’ on September 26th, 2025. This high-energy EP featured the brand-new up-tempo anthem ‘In the Room’—a bold declaration of God; presence and power—alongside five live favorites pulled from Fortune’s 20th Anniversary Live Recording. This isn’t just a project… it’s a moment. A celebration. A reminder that when God is in the room, everything changes.
