Fred Anderson, born on March 22, 1929, in Monroe, Louisiana, was an American jazz tenor saxophonist who settled in Chicago, Illinois, and developed a style rooted in swing, hard bop, and free jazz. After acquiring his first saxophone at age ten, He studied privately and at the Roy Knapp Conservatory while working as a waiter, and he began performing in Chicago’s weekly jam sessions in the early 1960s. His early recordings appeared on Delmark releases such as Song for (1967) and As If It Were the Seasons (1968), with Joseph Jarman, and he joined the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, contributing to the AACM’s growth. His discography includes Another Place (1978), Dark Day (1979), and The Missing Link (1984), with later releases Blue Winter (2005) and From the River to the Ocean (2007). He died on June 24, 2010, at age 81.
