Fiat Lux formed in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, in 1982, by Steve Wright (vocals, percussion) and David P Crickmore (guitars, bass, keyboards), who had studied drama together at Bretton Hall College. Ian Nelson (sax, keyboards), younger brother of Be-Bop Deluxe's Bill Nelson, joined shortly afterward to complete the band's classic line-up. Bill Nelson produced their first single, "Feels Like Winter Again" b/w "This Illness," released on his Cocteau label in November 1982; it gained radio airplay and led to a deal with Polydor and support slots with Howard Jones. The band had UK chart hits with "Secrets" (January 1984, number 65) and "Blue Emotion" (March 1984, number 59), released the mini-album Hired History (August 1984), and followed with the single "House Of Thorns" (September 1984), which stalled at number 100, and their final single, "Solitary Lovers" (January 1985). After "House Of Thorns" underperformed, Crickmore departed, and the band disbanded in 1985. Steve Wright went on to form Hoi Poloi before leaving music to become a television director, while David P Crickmore pursued more experimental projects before co-founding folk group The Durbervilles, who began presenting a weekly show on BBC Radio Leeds from 2005. Ian Nelson continued working with his brother Bill into the early 1990s and died on 23 April 2006. In 2017, Wright and Crickmore reformed Fiat Lux, re-recording "Secrets," and released a full album of new material, Saved Symmetry, in March 2019.
