Maija Sofia Makela, born in County Galway, Ireland, is a folk singer-songwriter. Her debut EP sentient light was released in 2014, followed by The Sugar Sea in 2015. In 2019, she released Bath Time, an album exploring women in art and folklore that earned a nomination for the Choice Music Prize and featured tracks relating to marginalized women such as Elizabeth Siddal and Bridget Cleary. Her second studio album, True Love, was issued in 2023. She became known for combining contemporary folk music with themes drawn from mythology, folklore, feminism and overlooked historical narratives.
