Steril is a German electro-industrial and EBM band from Oldenburg. Formed in 1989, the group consists of singer Mähne Meenen, guitarist Axel Tasler and keyboardist Jan Wilking. The ensemble was a prominent artist on the Off Beat label, helping it become a major independent source for electronic music in Germany. The trio released its debut EP, “Transmission Pervous”, in 1995. Their early recordings included the albums Egoism (1996) and Venustrap (1996). In 1996, the band toured Germany with the groups Haujobb and Covenant. Following a hiatus from the studio, Steril returned in 2003 with the album Purification, which incorporated elements of metal, rave and hip-hop. The record reached the top 20 of the German alternative charts (DAC). The ensemble subsequently signed with the label StrangeWays Records. Their later recordings included the studio albums Realism (2006), Misanthrop (2016) and Empiricism (2019). The band is also known for energetic live performances, supporting front 242 on several German tour dates in 2014.
