Lucia Valentini, born on August 29, 1946 in Padua, Italy, was an Italian mezzo‑soprano and contralto. After initial studies at the Padua Conservatory of Music and later at the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory in Venice, she debuted as Angelina in La Cenerentola at the Teatro Grande in Brescia in 1969 and later reprised her role at La Scala in 1973 under Claudio Abbado, establishing herself in Rossini’s works. She won the 1972 RAI International Competition for New Rossini Voices, a pivotal moment that launched her professional trajectory. Her discography includes the 1977 recording of Vivaldi: Magnificat / Gloria and the 1984 Rossini: La Donna del Lago. Valentini toured extensively, performing at major houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Vienna Staatsoper. She died on June 11, 1998 in Seattle following complications from leukemia treatment.
