The Moving Sidewalks was an American psychedelic and blues rock band formed in 1966 in Houston, Texas, by vocalist and guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Don Summers, keyboardist Tom Moore, and drummer Dan Mitchell. Conceptually inspired by Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators, the group gained popularity in Houston with their 1967 single “99th Floor”, which topped the local charts at Number 1 for six weeks. This success led to a contract with Wand Records, which released their second single, “Need Me”, a number 10 hit for the group. The band opened for prominent touring acts including the Doors and Jimi Hendrix, who became a close friend of Gibbons. The group issued several singles and their debut studio album, Flash (1969), before Summers and Moore were drafted into the United States Army. Following the band's resulting end, Gibbons and Mitchell joined with Lanier Greig to form ZZ Top. In January 2013, Gibbons announced a reunion of the original lineup, which performed on March 30, 2013, at B.B. King's Blues Club in New York City, and headlined the Austin Psych Fest on May 1, 2013, and a charity gala in Houston on September 28, 2013. Posthumous compilations of their material include 99th Floor (1982) and The Complete Collection (2012).
