SOK was an East German jazz-rock ensemble that emerged in 1971, at a time when the fusion of jazz and rock was still relatively new in the GDR. Led by pianist and composer Ulrich Gumpert, the group featured an accomplished lineup that included drummer Günter “Baby” Sommer and saxophonist Helmut Forsthoff. They released a self-titled album in 1994, blending electric instruments and a horn section with experimental passages that sometimes moved toward free jazz. SOK also featured vocalists Barbara “Bärbel” Volz and later Gisela Dreßler, whose blues-oriented voice added another dimension to the group’s sound. After Gumpert and Sommer departed in 1973, SOK continued briefly before disbanding in the mid-1970s.
