John Goldsby was born on December 10, 1958, in Louisville, Kentucky, and is an American jazz bassist, composer, teacher, and author. After studying with Rufus Reid, Dave Holland, and Jamey Aebersold, he established himself in Louisville before moving to New York City in 1980, where he worked as a house bassist at Stanley J’s and collaborated with artists such as Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, and Wynton Marsalis. In 1994, he joined the WDR Big Band in Cologne, remaining a member until 2024, while recording with the Jazz Orchestra. His sole studio release, The Innkeeper’s Gun, appeared in 2010 on Bass Lion. He received the Special Recognition Award in 2009.
