Pandit Pran Nath, born on November 3, 1918, in Lahore, British India, was an Indian classical singer known for his mastery of the Kirana gharana singing style. At age 13, he left home to study under Abdul Wahid Khan. Pran Nath began his professional career with All India Radio in 1937 and released his first album, Earth Groove, in 1968. In 1972, he established the Kirana Center for Indian Classical Music in New York City and taught at various universities across the US and Europe. Notable albums include Ragas (1971) and Ragas of Morning & Night (1986). He collaborated with the Kronos Quartet on their album Short Stories in 1993. Pran Nath died of heart failure on June 13, 1996, in Berkeley, California. His influence extended to notable American minimalist and jazz musicians, including La Monte Young, Terry Riley, and Don Cherry.
