Carlton McCarthy, known professionally as Carlton, is a singer-songwriter from Bristol, England. He first gained recognition for his vocals on "Any Love" (1988), the debut single by Massive Attack and the first production by Smith & Mighty. In 1990, he released his debut album, The Call Is Strong, produced by Smith & Mighty and widely regarded as a landmark of the Bristol sound. The album spawned three UK chart singles: "Do You Dream", "Cool with Nature", and "Love and Pain", the last reaching number 56 on the UK Singles Chart. Carlton later collaborated with Bomb the Bass on the 1995 single "1 to 1 Religion", which reached number 53 in the UK. He continued recording through the 1990s, including a collaboration with Serious Danger on "Do U Dream" in 1999.
