Hukwe Ubi Zawose was a Tanzanian musician and singer born in Tanganyika in 1938. Zawose was a member of the Gogo people and performed using traditional instruments including the ilimba and zeze. They received national recognition after being invited by President Julius Nyerere to perform in Dar es Salaam. Zawose collaborated with Peter Gabriel and released the albums Chibite (1996) and Assembly (2002) through the Real World Records label. Their discography includes the albums Tanzania Yetu (1985), Mkuki Wa Rocho (A Spear To The Soul) (2000), and the posthumous recording Big Blue Ball (2008). Zawose received the Zeze Award in 2002 and an honorary doctorate from the Sibelius Academy in 1998. Zawose died in 2003.
