Dorothy Masuka

Dorothy Masuka, born September 3, 1935, in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia, was a South African jazz singer whose music gained widespread popularity during the 1950s. After her song "Dr. Malan," which referenced pro-apartheid politician D.L Malan, was banned, Masuka sang a tribute to Patrice Lumumba in 1961, prompting her exile from South Africa. Masuka spent 31 years in Zambia, where she also worked as a flight attendant, before returning to Zimbabwe following its independence in 1980. Her discography includes albums like Pata Pata (1991) and Lendaba (This Matter) (2003). She remained active as a performer, appearing in New York in 2017, and died in Johannesburg in 2019 at the age of 83.
