James Gilchrist, born on April 29, 1966, in Banbury, Oxfordshire, is a British tenor renowned for his performances in recital and oratorio. A former chorister at New College, Oxford, and choral scholar at King's College, Cambridge, he initially trained as a physician before pursuing music full-time in 1996. Gilchrist has performed extensively in the United Kingdom and internationally, with a repertoire spanning works by Handel, Purcell, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Bach, Elgar, and Tippett. He has appeared with leading ensembles and orchestras, including the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and the Handel and Haydn Society. His recordings include Hugo Wolf's complete songs and the songs of 20th-century composer Muriel Herbert. He has also served as president of the music therapy charity Mindsong.
