Wilma Cosmé, known professionally as Sa-Fire, was born January 16, 1966 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and is an American singer whose career began as a session vocalist in East Harlem, Manhattan. Her breakthrough came with the 1986 single "Don't Break My Heart" and her 1988 self-titled debut album Sa-Fire, released on Mercury and PolyGram, featuring the single "Boy, I've Been Told" which reached number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her most successful single, "Thinking of You", peaked at number 4 on the Adult Contemporary chart and number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989, earning her an ASCAP Award. She recorded a cover of "I Will Survive" for the soundtrack of the film She-Devil and released her second studio album, I Wasn't Born Yesterday, in 1991, which featured the single "Taste the Bass", peaking at number 6 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. In 1996, she issued the Spanish-language album Atrevida with Sony Discos, and in 2001 released Bringing Back the Groove, featuring a cover of New Edition's "Can You Stand the Rain" and the single "Don't Break My Heart 2002", which reached number 3 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. Sa-Fire sold over 1.9 million records, won six New York Music Awards, three Desi Awards, and the LGBT Lifetime Achievement Award, and was highlighted by Paper Magazine in 2021 as an iconic figure of freestyle music.
