Ephat Mujuru, born in 1950, was a Zimbabwean musician from Manicaland. He began playing the mbira under his grandfather Muchatera Mujuru's guidance. In 1972, he formed Chaminuka and gained national radio play with "Guruswa", addressing Zimbabwe’s independence struggle. After independence in 1980, Mujuru renamed his group Spirit of the People and recorded his first album using traditional instruments. He helped found the National Dance Company and taught ethnomusicology at the Zimbabwe College of Music. In 1982, he traveled to the United States, eventually teaching mbira at the University of Washington in Seattle. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Mujuru continued performing and released albums such as Master of Mbira from Zimbabwe (1985) and Shona Spirit (Mbira Masters from Zimbabwe) (1996) with Dumisani Maraire. Mujuru passed away in 2001.
