Layne Redmond, born August 19, 1952, in Florida, was an American drummer, teacher, historian, and leading authority on the frame drum. She dedicated much of her career to researching the instrument's role in the spiritual and healing traditions of the ancient Mediterranean, culminating in her influential 1997 book When the Drummers Were Women. Drum manufacturer Remo honored her by producing its first Signature Series frame drum based on her design. In 2000, Drum! magazine named her among the "53 Heavyweight Drummers Who Made a Difference in the 1990s." Redmond also released recordings including The Wave of Bliss, Invoking the Muse, Trance Union, and Since the Beginning, along with meditation albums. She recorded for the Sounds True label. Redmond passed away on October 28, 2013.
