The American Brass Quintet, founded in 1960, distinguished itself by using a bass trombone instead of a tuba. The group focused on music originally written for brass instruments and toured extensively across multiple continents. Notable albums include Music Of The Renaissance And Baroque For Brass Quintet (1967) and The American Brass Quintet (1969). The quintet became Ensemble-in-Residence at the Aspen Music Festival in 1970 and at the Juilliard School in 1987. They commissioned new works from composers like Samuel Adler and Elliott Carter, releasing over twenty-five recordings of new pieces for brass quintet. In 2013, they received Chamber Music America's Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award.
