Derek Lee Ragin, born June 17, 1958 in West Point, New York, is an American countertenor. He began voice training with the Newark Boys Chorus and studied at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Ragin's operatic debut came as Oberon in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night's Dream. He gained recognition by winning the 1983 Purcell-Britten Prize for Concert Singers, his London recital debut was at Wigmore Hall in 1984. He performed Joe in Carmen Jones and made his Metropolitan Opera debut in George Frideric Handel’s Giulio Cesare in 1988. Ragin released several albums including Antonio Vivaldi, 6 Cantate da Camera (1989) and Haendel: Scipione (2010). His recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms also notably won a Grammy Award.
