DJ Madness © – More than just a name. An institution.
DJ Madness symbolizes the beginnings of professional DJ culture in Switzerland. As early as 1986—at a time when club culture was virtually nonexistent in this country—Josi Molnar made the decisive choice to pursue a career as a professional DJ.
His significance, however, extends far beyond the DJ booth: With the party label Delirium, which he founded together with his brother Erik and two other companions, he organized Switzerland’s first official techno party in the late 1980s—a milestone for the electronic music scene. To this day, Delirium remains a household name in Swiss party culture.
The Zurich club scene would not be the same without him. Whether as a co-founder of the magazine Raveline, a defining figure of the first Zurich Street Parade in the early 1990s, or a driving force behind legendary venues like Hells Kitchen or New Gothic—Josi Molnar has been a creative driving force behind the local nightlife scene from the very beginning. To many, he remains one of the central key figures of the Zurich club scene.
His technical skills, his keen sense of the crowd, and his uncompromising commitment to quality led to his selection as “DJ of the Year” in 1995 from among 80 nominated Swiss DJs. For him, however, this award was never an end in itself:
“I make music for people. Their feedback, their dancing, their joy—that’s the only recognition that matters to me. Without them, there would be Josi Molnar—but no DJ Madness.”
Entrepreneur. Visionary. Doer.
Alongside his musical career, DJ Madness demonstrated an entrepreneurial flair early on: With the founding of SUB ZERO Records—Switzerland’s first techno label—as well as Electron Records (1996) and Electro Industries (1997), he created a sustainable platform for electronic music. In doing so, he established himself not only as an artist but also as a producer and entrepreneur.
In 1998, the Delirium label found a new home at Zurich’s iconic Supermarket club, where it significantly shaped the nightlife scene until 2005.
Another milestone followed in 2004: Together with his brother, he opened the record store Central Records in the immediate vicinity of Zurich’s main train station. The store was far more than just a retail space—it evolved into a creative hub for DJs, offering vinyl, equipment, gadgets, and the opportunity to produce their own tracks right on the spot. DJ Madness consistently embodied the professional standards demanded by the scene.
In demand internationally. Remained authentic.
DJ Madness doesn’t think in terms of national borders: In 2004, he was the first Swiss DJ to perform at the Budapest Parade in Hungary—and he still enjoys cult status there today. He also made history as the first Swiss DJ to perform at the legendary Café del Mar in Ibiza.
Performances at renowned London clubs such as Turnmills and The Egg Club underscore his international relevance and his lasting influence on the electronic music scene.
A pioneer who sets trends.
DJ Madness was never a follower—on the contrary: he set trends instead of following them. To this day, he is considered a landmark in the history of electronic music in Switzerland—with a reach far beyond the country’s borders.
