The Manhattan Jazz Quintet, a jazz ensemble, was formed in 1983 at the suggestion of Japanese jazz magazine Swing Journal and King record label. The group initially consisted of David Matthews on piano, Lew Soloff on trumpet, George Young on tenor sax, Eddie Gómez on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums. Their debut album, Manhattan Jazz Quintet, was released in 1984, winning the Gold Disk Award of Swing that same year. The quintet's lineup evolved over time, with notable changes including Dave Weckl replacing Steve Gadd from 1988 to 1989 and Charnett Moffett taking over bass duties after Eddie Gómez left in 1992. Significant subsequent albums include Autumn Leaves (1985), My Funny Valentine (1986), and Manteca - Live at Sweet Basil (1992).
