Richard MacQueen Wellstood, born November 25, 1927 in Greenwich, Connecticut, was an American jazz pianist. He received early piano lessons from his mother, a Juilliard School graduate and church organist, but was self-taught in stride and boogie-woogie styles. In 1946, he began performing with Bob Wilber's bands, followed by two years of accompanying Sidney Bechet, and toured Europe with Jimmy Archey in 1952. His leader debut album, Uptown and Lowdown (1961), was followed by From Dixie to Swing (1971), From Ragtime On (1971), and Plays Ragtime Music of The Sting (1974). He also released the album Live at Hanratty's (1981). Throughout his career, he worked with musicians such as Ben Webster, Kenny Davern, and Dick Hyman, and performed frequently at the Newport Jazz Festival. He died of a heart attack on July 24, 1987 in Palo Alto, California.
