Jackie Shane, born on May 15, 1940, in Nashville, Tennessee, was an American soul and rhythm‑and‑blues singer who emerged in Toronto’s 1960s music scene. After early drumming and vocal work in Nashville, she relocated to Canada in 1959 and joined Frank Motley’s band, later becoming its lead vocalist. Her breakthrough came with the single "Any Other Way" back with "Sticks and Stones" (1962), which reached number 2 on Toronto’s CHUM Chart and number 68 on Canada’s RPM national chart in 1967. She released the live album Jackie Shane Live (1967) and issued several singles, including "Stand Up Straight and Tall" (1967) and "Cruel Cruel World" (1970). She collaborated with artists such as Little Richard and appeared on Motown‑era recording sessions. After fading from the spotlight in the early 1970s, she returned to Nashville to care for family. She died in her sleep on February 21, 2019.
