Greg Mendez is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began making music in 2006 and spent years recording quietly between Philadelphia and New York before releasing his first full-length album, Phone Records, in 2016. He followed with the EP Shrug in 2017, the lo-fi albums ¯_(ツ)_/¯ and & Gum Trash, and the split release Greg Mendez / Rachel Lightner in 2018. After Heavy Metal High in 2019 and Cherry Hell in 2020, Greg Mendez released Live at Purgatory in 2022, then reached a wider indie audience with his self-titled 2023 album, Greg Mendez. Built around short, plainspoken songs such as “Rev. John / Friend,” “Maria,” “Shark’s Mouth,” and “Goodbye / Trouble,” the album brought sharper attention to his mix of lo-fi recording, folk melodies, indie rock, and writing about grief, addiction, family, and memory. In 2024, he appeared with They Are Gutting a Body of Water and Sun Organ on “Krillin,” signed to Dead Oceans, and released the EP First Time / Alone, led by “First Time” and “Alone.” In 2026, Greg Mendez released his Dead Oceans full-length debut, Beauty Land, recorded mostly to tape in his Philadelphia home studio and previewed by “I Wanna Feel Pretty,” “Gentle Love,” “Frog,” and “No Evil,” alongside a North American tour.
