Yuya Uchida (内田 裕也), born 内田 雄也 on 17 November 1939 in Nishinomiya, Japan, began his musical path after leaving high school at 17 and entered the scene in 1957. His first single, "Lonely Johnny" (1963), marked his entry into the Japanese pop market and was followed by a string of early releases such as "Blue Jean to Kawa Jumper" and "Viva Las Vegas" that established his rock‑influenced style. In 1964 he co‑released the Rock Surfing Hot Rod EP with Isao Bitoh, and the following year the Let’s Go Monkey EP further cemented his presence in the emerging Japanese rock scene. Uchida’s breakthrough came with the 1969 album Challenge! by Yuya Uchida & The Flowers, featuring covers of Western psychedelic rock, which introduced international sounds to Japanese audiences. He later formed Flower Travellin' Band, releasing Anywhere (1970) and Satori (1971) in North America, and producing subsequent albums Made in Japan (1972) and Make Up (1973) before the group disbanded. Uchida continued a prolific solo career, collaborating with artists such as The Ventures and Frank Zappa, and released the 2014 single "Shekina Baby" with Rino Sashihara. He passed away from pneumonia on 17 March 2019 in Tokyo, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 61st Japan Record Awards on 30 December 2019.
