The Unicorns, a rock band from Montreal, Canada, were formed in December 2000 by Nicholas Thorburn and Alden Penner. The duo met in high school and self-released their debut nine-track CD Unicorns Are People Too in 2003 through their own label Caterpillars of the Community. In the same year, they released their debut studio LP Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? on Alien8 Recordings and Rough Trade, which received critical acclaim from publications such as The Village Voice and NME. The band toured extensively across North America, Europe, and Australia following the album's release. In December 2004, after a hectic touring schedule that led to internal tensions, the Unicorns announced their split through a message on their website. After disbanding, Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? was reissued in 2014 and the band reunited for a short run of shows in support of Arcade Fire.
