Nationalgalerie was a Hamburg‑based rock group fronted by Niels Frevert, who later pursued a solo career. The band emerged from the Niendorf district and positioned itself within the German alternative‑rock scene, blending American‑style rock with German lyrics. Their most successful track came with the single “Evelin” from the 1993 album Indiana. Nationalgalerie signed with Dragnet, a subdivision of Sony Music, and released the albums Heimatlos (1991), Kein Wunder (1992), Indiana (1993), and Meskalin (1995). The group toured in Germany during the early 1990s and maintained a presence on German radio and television. In 1997, after failed preparations for a fifth studio album, Nationalgalerie disbanded, and Niels Frevert shifted focus to a solo career. The band’s legacy was later revisited with the 2014 compilation Alles: Werkschau, highlighting their influence on the 1990s German rock landscape.
