Gastr del Sol was an American post-rock and avant-garde band formed in Chicago in 1991 by David Grubbs, Bundy K. Brown, and John McEntire. After premiering song sketches during the final shows of their previous band Bastro—released in 2005 as the live album Antlers—the trio released its debut album, The Serpentine Similar (1993). Following the departure of Brown and McEntire to join Tortoise, Jim O'Rourke joined the group, transforming it into a collaboration between Grubbs and O'Rourke, supported by a rotating lineup of guest musicians. Subsequent releases include the albums Crookt, Crackt, or Fly (1994), Upgrade & Afterlife (1996), and Camoufleur (1998), alongside the EPs Mirror Repair (1994) and The Harp Factory on Lake Street (1995). The album Camoufleur was co-written with Markus Popp of the German glitch project Oval. Due to personal differences, the duo split up in 1998. In 2024, the record label Drag City released We Have Dozens of Titles, a retrospective box set containing rare and unreleased recordings made between 1993 and 1998.
