Ricardo Modrego was born on 19 October 1934 in Madrid, Spain, and became a flamenco guitarist. He began performing with his sister, dancer Nana Lorca, in the early 1950s, and the sibling duo secured a contract to accompany the Spanish dancer Hurtado de Cordoba in South America. In 1954, they appeared at New York’s 48th Street Theatre, though the engagement lasted only two weeks. Modrego returned to Spain, joined Pilar López’s company, and recorded his first albums with Paco de Lucía: Dos Guitarras Flamencas (1964), 12 Canciones de García Lorca para Guitarra (1965), and 12 Éxitos para Dos Guitarras Flamencas (1965). He toured with José Greco’s dance troupe and later taught guitar in Madrid. Modrego died of lung cancer on 17 January 2017.
