He entered the pop scene in the mid-1970s, releasing the single "Der Macher" in 1975, which became his breakthrough hit. He issued his debut album Der Macher in 1976, followed by further albums including Meine Tür Steht Immer Offen in 1978. The early 1980s saw a steady output with Leben So Wie Ich Es Mag (1980), Herz & Schnauze (1982), and Zurückgelehnt (1984), each continuing his run of pop-leaning releases. In 1987 he released Ich Kann Gewinnen, and two years later, Herzschlag (1989) continued his string of popular releases. In his later years the compilation Das Beste Von Volker Lechtenbrink – Seine Grössten Erfolge (1999) gathered his earlier work for a new audience. His musical style blended pop melodies with elements of Schlager, and his recordings were distributed by German labels including Polydor and Sony BMG. He also worked as a lyricist for other artists, including Peter Maffay, and his own singles and albums charted in Germany, with "Der Macher" reaching as high as number 19. Volker Lechtenbrink remained active as an actor and narrator through his later years, and he died in Hamburg on 22 November 2021, leaving behind a catalog of pop hits that resonated with audiences across decades.
