Beatbetrieb was formed in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1997 by Andreas Volz, Felix Neun, Tobi Wörner, and Theo Eißler; the group debuted with a self‑titled maxi‑CD in 1998 produced by Derek von Krogh. Their first significant breakthrough came in 2000 when Michael Janz joined as lead vocalist, and the band contributed to the compilation WWJD: What Would Jesus Do?. The same year, Beatbetrieb performed at the Expo 2000 in Hannover during the youth event JesusHouse. In 2001 the group secured a contract with Polydor, and in September 2002 the single "Wenn du es so willst" entered the German charts at position 75, accompanied by a music video that received several weeks of MTV airplay. March 2003 saw Beatbetrieb achieve second place in the German pre‑selection for the Eurovision Song Contest with "Woran glaubst du?", a track from the album Immer, produced by Derek von Krogh and Dieter Falk. The same year the single "Raus aus dem Labyrinth" was released, after which Theo Eißler departed. In 2004 the single "Die neue Zeitrechnung" appeared on the CD Zeichen der Zeit. The band expanded to five members by 2006, recording an acoustic live album in Stuttgart, but ultimately disbanded in 2009. Beatbetrieb earned several accolades, including the 1998 Newcomerwettbewerb Clip Attack award, the 2003 golden Stimmgabel, and a nomination for the ECHO Nachwuchspreis for "Wenn du es so willst".
