Janne Juhani Mertanen, born on August 28, 1967, in Joensuu, Finland, is a Finnish classical pianist. He began playing the piano at age 12 and studied at the Joensuu Conservatory and later at the Sibelius Academy. His breakthrough came in 1994 with a Chopin program debut at London's Wigmore Hall. Mertanen is particularly known for his performances and recordings of Frédéric Chopin, including "Chopin: Nocturnes Vol. 1" (2001) and "Chopin: Nocturnes Vol. 2" (2003), both of which won the Grand Prix du Disque Frederic Chopin award in Warsaw in 2005. He has also released Romantic Finnish Piano (2001).
